Post Reply. Search Advanced search. I currently own copies for the three languages that I would like to attain C2-level competency in: French, German and Spanish.
Whilst I am certain that there are more languages available, I shall make my review based on the French edition that I completed during the summer. French by Chantal Marsden A course with 2 paperback books a la Linguaphone and 4 double-faced cassettes: a The Handbook: contains language notes, spelling and grammar exercises, and a vague summary of the succeeding French conversations but no explicit translations of the French texts!!!
Everything is explained in English.
The conversations clearly show that the interlocutors are in Europe - Geneva, Switzerland to be exact - and are French-speaking natives. It is refreshing to see a publisher who is actually aware that French is also spoken outside of France!
The conversations developed into very interesting sagas: replete with witty humour, sarcasm, emotions and candour! The course is very well thought out and piques the interest of the intermediate learner who already has a foundation in the language.
Outstanding audio that is clearly enunciated, which makes it a joy to use for pronunciation and listening practice. Cons: 1. I am still scratching my head, left bereft of an explanation to my question, "Why did NTC not have translations in the Handbook? The lengths of the conversations are not balanced - within a single scene, you can have conversations whose lengths range from "just three sentences long" to soliloquies that rival those in S.

A brief scan of Amazon shows that this course is in very short supply my library-accessed copies look like this , and that the few sellers have generic book covers for the course which is always a warning sign for me. French Plus by Chantal Marsden Unfortunately, I did not find any reason why this course was called "Plus" as this course started at the B1 level and remained at the B1 level to the end. NTC Pub should have merged the two courses to create something that would rivaled Assimil and Linguaphone.
